Þǫkk refuses to cry Baldr

Translation by Bjǫrn Vargsson

« When the messengers came back home after having disclosed their message, they found in a cave a giantess named Þǫkkr, who refused to cry for Baldr to free him from Hel.

She said:
Þǫkk will cry
false tears
on Baldr’s funeral pyre.
Not living nor dead
I loved that karl’s son:
so Hel can hold him.

The messengers thought that actually she was Loki son of Laufey, who most of all had brought misfortune to the Æsir. »

Original text, taken from the Gylfaginning, Younger Edda, chapter 49

« Þá er sendimenn fóru heim ok hǫfðu vel rekit sín eyrindi, finna þeir í helli nǫkkvorum hvar gýgr sat, hon nefndisk Þǫkk. Þeir biðja hana gráta Baldr ór Helju.

Hon segir:
Þǫkk mun gráta
þurrum tárum
Baldrs bálfarar.
Kyks né dauðs
nautka ek karls sonar:
haldi Hel því er hefir.

En þess geta menn at þar hafi verit Loki Laufeyjarson, er flest hefir illt gert með ásum. »
